Welcome back to the Instant Impact podcast with your host, Elyse Archer! In today’s conversation, Elyse sits down with Dr. Carrie Rose to talk about building an online course. Dr. Rose is a #1 Best Selling Author, Educator, Entrepreneur,  & Keynote Speaker, Thinkific Expert, and notably one of Huffington Posts Must Follow Women Entrepreneurs. Currently, she works with entrepreneurs, online marketers, and businesses around the country to provide the highest quality of learning strategies with the greatest amount of impact on a variety of different platforms. Carrie has created a course building process that uses the findings from over 500 research studies on how the human brain connects to content. Her strategy is based around the user and what benefits they are getting from the course and today she offers some insight into what that entails.

First, she shares with us who may be a good candidate for building an online course. She says that in the end, you owe it to your family and yourself to put yourself in a place where if something were to happen, you could shift your focus to what is most important and meet the needs of your family. Outside of that, it depends on what you’re trying to sell–be it a service, coaching, or brick and mortar, there are plenty of opportunities to create a course. If you have something that you’re known for, expertise you can share, and a process that has the clear intention of getting your customer on the right path, you’re in a good place to hit the ground running.

Carrie talks about the first steps we can take when we’re looking to build an online course. Something to watch out for, she says, is taking every bit of knowledge you know and shoving it into a course. This can turn into a 45-hour long course with massively long videos, which won’t retain the value you’re hoping to give. A better approach would be to look at your standard customer’s pathway to success and break down places where they may need guidance. You want to bring them from point A to point B and give them the quickest route to the most immediate win. Try to hone in on the ‘why’ and ‘how’ and turn those into your objectives.

Finally, Carrie and Elyse talk about pricing, one of the most difficult things to do in the practice. Carrie’s insight is to think about the value of the solution you’re providing. The fastest and easiest way to gauge where you’re pricing should be is to test it in the market. If you’re giving it away for free, you’re not getting true data on who is interested in purchasing the course. She suggests not to wait to grow a list before marketing your course–run after it. Remember that quality is greater than quality. A shorter list with engagement is more valuable than a long list with none.
